Intelligence
Origin. Latin intelligentia, from intelligere: to understand, discern, or perceive. Intelligere combines inter, between, with legere, to choose, gather, or read.
Literally: to choose between, or read between
The word carries an old idea of discrimination: noticing differences, selecting, and making sense of what is there. Many AI tasks reduce to this core operation. The system must distinguish one pattern from another and act on the distinction.
Intelligence has never had one universal measure. Psychology, education, biology, philosophy, and computer science have all used the term differently, and AI inherits that ambiguity. Prediction, search, planning, and language can each reveal different capabilities. The word opens a broad field of questions about what counts as intelligence.
